WINSTON-SALEM, NC – January 22, 2026 – Noah Geister could have built his bioprinting company almost anywhere. He chose North Carolina.
“There’s nowhere else in the world I’d build my product and start my company,” said Geister, CEO of GeisterBio, an Austrian startup developing a bioprinter and one of the newest additions to the Piedmont Triad’s regenerative medicine ecosystem. GeisterBio has already struck up co-development work with the Innovation, Translation and Education Core at North Carolina A&T State University, one of five specialized facilities the Regenerative Medicine Engine in North Carolina operates across the region.
GeisterBio is part of a broader wave of new arrivals. Twenty-two companies have established a physical presence in the region since the Engine launched two years ago, and the Innovation Accelerator, a shared lab and office space in Innovation Quarter, recently reached full occupancy. Supine Therapeutics and Corestem Chemon both signed leases there this year, while NuMediSyn, a new biotech company, is preparing to move into leased space at OTP/Sparq Labs and begin working with the Engine’s Test Bed once it settles in.
More space is on the way. BioSpherix’s Center for Cytocentric Technologies, a GMP-capable lab planned for Innovation Quarter, is under construction and expected to open this spring. And Greater Winston-Salem Inc.’s new BioNest program has begun awarding grants of up to $25,000 to life sciences companies expanding into or relocating to Winston-Salem; Ricoh 3D for Healthcare and Plakous Therapeutics are the program’s first two recipients, using the funding to expand research, prototyping and production capacity.
In all, 260 companies and organizations are now engaged with at least one Engine program, with 40 of them physically based in the region, up from 18 before the Engine launched.
